MEXICO La Trinitaria to La Nubes on the Río Jataté

A scenic ride among several lakes and ending for a so-so meal at a beautiful waterfall

Dist: 114 km; Date: Jul 2017

Leave La Trinitaria riding west on Highway 307 have an interesting audiobook or podcast ready because the first 35 km of this route are straight and uneventful unless your concentration wanes and you fail to notice the topes (speedbumps). Alternatively you might enter this route midway by crossing from Guatemala at the Gracias a Dios-Carmen Xhán border. Eventually you reach the tollbooth, which denotes that you have entered the Lagunas de Montebello National Park. This region includes one large, three medium, and various smaller lakes tucked among a forested landscape. For a pleasant detour, take the unpaved spur to the left at 6.4 km from the tollbooth to visit the picturesque Cinco Lagos, which despite its name is really just one lake.

From this potential detour, it’s 8 weaving kilometers to the far end of the national park and about 48 sinuous, forested kilometers to the turn-off to the small town of Jerusalén. From Jerusalén it is almost 11 beautifully graded and maintained unpaved kilometers to the town of Gallo Giro. The Causas Verdes Las Nubes hotel is just a hundred meters beyond the town. The accommodations are ok for the price and the food is just so-so but watching the falls from the suspension bridge is an experience. There is a nice 2 km hike through the forest and an inexpensive camping option. The whole experience is magnified if you happen to come during the low season – the falls are less impressive but you might just have the place to yourself.
