MEXICO Mazatlán to La Ciudad
A Hair-raising, paved, corkscrew ride from the gulf coast through the western Sierra Madre mountains
Dist: 175 km, Date: Nov 2013
We reached Mazatlán via ferry from La Paz in Baja California Sur but, however you get there, depart on Hwy 40 (not Hwy 40D, which is the well-manicured paid highway). The insanity of nonstop twisties; oncoming semis; and gravel-strewn construction zones begins just after Concordia and about 45 km from downtown Mazatlán. Stay sharp and pick the right music for the ride. Just outside La Ciudad the highway begins to straighten out. Continuing into La Ciudad, make a right on Adolfo López Mateos and continue onto a dirt road into Parque Natural Mexiquillo where you can rent a cabin. After starting in the head of the Gulf, you’ve spent the last couple hours climbing mountains so this is a good place to gather some wood and make a fire. Learn a lesson from us and consider stopping in town for take-away tacos so you don’t have to ride out looking for dinner after your showered, clean, and comfy.
